MLK Youth Day of Service The City of Montgomery, Hands On River Region and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Upsilon Lambda Chapter) have teamed up to host the first Martin Luther King Dream Generation Day of Service on Monday, January 21, 2013 from 9a.m. to 12 noon. The event is designed to empower aspiring young leaders ages 13-24 to make a difference in their communities by giving back and showing that they care.

Youth will participate in a variety of projects throughout the city including feeding the homeless, collecting donations for needy children, making valentine cards for senior citizens, painting murals and much more. Our goal is inspire young people to make a difference in their communities by assuming leadership roles, offering solutions to problems and seeing themselves as assets.

Individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can participate in this event. Outreach and recruitment will target youth and young adults from a variety of areas including schools, campuses, churches and agencies. Three teams will be formed around the nine City Council districts and assigned to various projects. As individuals and teams register to participate, each will be assigned by their address to work with others representing their district. A sample of the teams is described below:

Team DREAM (Districts 1-3) | Team HOPE (Districts 4-6) | Team UNITE (Districts 7-9)

Registrations are currently being accepted online at handsonriverregion.org through January 14th. Early registration is encouraged. At the conclusion of all service projects, youth will participate in a Celebration of Service with food, music and prizes.

Mayor Strange will issue the first Dream Generation award to the team that recruits the most youth and/or young adult volunteers to participate.

In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. Each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." The MLK Day of Service calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."

When young people volunteer, the community gains a generation who care about where they live and are willing to make a commitment to improvement. This event provides an opportunity for Montgomery to create a culture that support and empower youth.
