Miami Marlins Cancel Home Opener After Players Test Positive For COVID-19

Miami Marlins v Atlanta Braves

Less than a week after Major League Baseball began a shortened 60-game season, the Miami Marlins are dealing with a coronavirus outbreak. As of Monday (July 27), 12 players and two coaches have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Marlins just wrapped up a series in Philadelphia and were scheduled to return home to Miami on Sunday night, but the team decided to stay in Philadelphia to undergo additional testing. As a result, the Marlins were forced to cancel their home-opener against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.

The Phillies said all staff members who worked in close proximity with the Marlins during the weekend series will be quarantined. They also said the entire clubhouse will be cleaned and disinfected. The New York Yankees are scheduled to begin a three-game series against the Phillies and will bring their own clubhouse staff.

According to Joel Sherman, the first game in that series has been canceled.
